Erin O'Toole resigned as leader of the Conservative Party of Canada on February 2, 2022, after losing a leadership review vote. He remained the Member of Parliament for Durham until officially stepping away from politics on August 2, 2023.

A by-election was held on March 4, 2024, with several candidates vying for the seat. The race featured Liberal candidate Robert Rock, Conservative candidate Jamil Jivani, NDP candidate Chris Borgia, Green Party candidate Kevin MacKenzie, PPC candidate Patricia Conlin, Centrist Party candidate Khalid Qureshi, Independent candidate Pranay Gunti, and United Party leader Grant Abraham.

Notably, both Jamil Jivani and Grant Abraham were parachute candidates, running in Durham despite lacking prior connections to the riding. In the end, Jivani secured victory with 57.44% of the vote, holding the seat for the Conservative Party.
